In April 2021, Scientific American published an article on a study of psilocybin (the active ingredient in truffles) and antidepressants. The result was that symptoms of depression improved just as much as when taking antidepressants. In fact, psilocybin also caused fewer side effects. Although the study was quite small, the initial results are promising.
The study with psilocybin was conducted on 59 people, while more than 1,000 volunteers had signed up. This shows that many people are looking for alternatives to antidepressants. All subjects had been suffering from major depression for a long time. For the study, the group was divided into two and administered different doses of psilocybin or a placebo.
A shocking fact is that as much as 10% of the American population suffers from depression. The initial results of the study are promising. The full article can be found here: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/psilocybin-therapy-may-work-as-well-as-common-antidepressant/
